After nearly a year of restoration work and roughly $25,000 in costs, the Texarkana Arts and Historic District's new trolley made its downtown debut Friday evening during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the U.S. Post Office and Federal Courthouse on North Stateline Avenue.
The trolley — a 1999 Freightliner bus previously owned by the Ark-Tex Council of Governments — was purchased using hotel occupancy tax funds and transformed into a vintage-style streetcar by a team of local businesses and city workers. Digital Effects handled the custom exterior wrap, while the City of Texarkana's fleet department handled mechanical work. Local vendors contributed everything from the sound system to interior cleaning.
Arts and Historic District Manager Brooke Stone called it a labor of love.
"We are excited to finally welcome this newest addition to the district. We are proud to have worked alongside so many talented local businesses and partners to create something that will serve our community and visitors for years to come."
The trolley will be used for historical tours, special events, and to help visitors with mobility issues explore the district. Both the Texas and Arkansas convention centers plan to use it for visiting tour groups.
