Feds order data centers off the grid during record heat — could the Ark-La-Tex be next?
The federal government isn't messing around anymore. This week, the U.S. Department of Energy ordered data centers across the mid-Atlantic to fire up their diesel backup generators and get off the public power grid — immediately — so regular folks could keep their air conditioners running during a brutal heat dome.
Heat indices pushed past 110°F from Washington, D.C. to New York City. Electricity demand on the PJM grid — which serves 67 million people across 13 states — came within a couple gigawatts of its all-time record set back in 2006. And the biggest force behind the squeeze? The explosion of AI data centers, concentrated in northern Virginia, home to the largest cluster of them on the planet.
These server farms power AI systems, cloud computing, streaming, and most of the internet you touch every day. They're also eating nearly all of the grid's projected demand growth through 2030 — PJM's own numbers show 32 gigawatts of growth coming, and all but 2 of those gigawatts are data centers. Capacity costs on the grid have jumped more than elevenfold in just a few auction cycles, a tab of roughly $9.3 billion now landing on everyday ratepayers.
When the grid got desperate this week, Energy Secretary Chris Wright didn't ask nicely. His emergency order lets PJM direct any customer pulling 50 megawatts or more to switch to on-site backup power within 15 minutes of an emergency signal — freeing up capacity for homes, hospitals, and nursing homes. It's the third time this year the feds have invoked emergency authority on PJM's territory.
Most of Texas sits on its own grid — ERCOT — and the Department of Energy has issued emergency orders to ERCOT this year too. The same crunch happening on the East Coast is building here. Data centers are expanding across Texas faster than anyone can build power plants to feed them, and when the next triple-digit stretch parks itself over the region — and it will — Texas could face the same choice: keep the server farms humming, or keep the people cool.
That's not a choice that should exist in America.
Here's where it gets murky. Those backup generators run on diesel and natural gas, and they put out more local air pollution than the big power plants they're standing in for. The DOE even issued a second order letting power plants blow past normal pollution limits during the emergency. It's a short-term fix with long-term consequences — and nobody has a clean answer yet.
The YEti sees both sides: you need reliable power, and you need it clean. But right now, the grid is being strangled by an industry that grew faster than the infrastructure feeding it.
AI data centers are driving innovation, sure. But when the choice comes down to keeping a server farm running or keeping grandma's air conditioner on, something's broken. The feds just proved they'll step in when it gets critical. The question is how long they can keep patching the system before it needs a full rebuild.
