EXARKANA, Texas — Construction is moving along on Texarkana's first Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen, taking shape on Walton Drive across from Academy Sports + Outdoors. According to state filings, the work is slated to wrap up in early October.
The location is part of the growing Waggoner Creek development, where a stretch of Walton Drive has been building into one of the city's newest restaurant corridors. The Cheddar's deal was brokered by Texarkana developer Richard Reynolds, and Chuy's is expected to open next door — both chains fall under the Darden Restaurants family, the parent company of Olive Garden.
For local fans of the chain, the wait for a closer option is nearly over. Until now, the nearest Cheddar's to Texarkana has been in Longview.
Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen, founded in 1979 in Arlington, Texas, is known for its made-from-scratch Southern-style comfort food and its signature honey butter croissants, with more than 180 locations nationwide.
A firm opening date hasn't been announced. Restaurants typically open several weeks after construction is complete to allow for hiring and staff training.
