A rare cool morning in the ArkLaTex — and it won't last the week

TEXARKANA, Texas — The ArkLaTex woke up Sunday to unusually comfortable conditions for early August, with outlying areas dipping into the 60s and Texarkana sitting near 71 degrees before sunrise.

Mornings like this are uncommon here in the first week of August, and they are not sticking around.

Highs climb through the week, reaching the mid 90s by Tuesday and about 97 degrees on both Wednesday and Thursday. Friday brings a 75% chance of rain along with a high near 95, and Saturday cools slightly to around 89.

The timing matters for anyone with a student in fall activities. New University Interscholastic League heat rules took effect Aug. 1, requiring Texas schools to monitor Wet Bulb Globe Temperature and modify or halt outdoor practices as readings rise. Midweek conditions are the kind that trigger those modifications.

The same stretch is a reminder on vehicles. A car's interior can climb roughly 20 degrees in 10 minutes, and children have died in hot cars on days far milder than 97 degrees. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle.
