TEXARKANA, Ark. — The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department is asking residents to be cautious after reports of people going door-to-door claiming to sell cookie dough.
Police say the sales are not connected to any verified fundraiser, school, church or organization, and that several residents have reported suspicious behavior associated with the visits. The department did not specify what that behavior involved.
Officers noted that many local schools, churches and community groups run legitimate fundraisers throughout the year. The reports TAPD has received involve individuals who are not affiliated with any known organization.
Police recommend not giving money or personal information to anyone at the door if you are unsure who they represent.
The warning comes as school fundraising season begins. Texarkana-area districts return to classes Aug. 12, and legitimate student fundraisers typically follow within weeks — which is also when residents are most accustomed to answering the door for one.
A few questions can settle it quickly. Ask which specific school, church or organization the seller represents, and who the sponsor or coach is. Ask for a phone number for that organization, then call the organization directly rather than a number the seller provides. Legitimate fundraisers can answer those questions without difficulty.
Police advise against letting anyone into your home and against paying with cash for a product to be delivered later.
