TEXARKANA, Texas — The Texarkana Museums System will record community stories on Saturday, Aug. 15, as part of an oral history project documenting the experiences and traditions of Black residents in the Texarkana region.
The collection day runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Organizers are asking participants to register in advance at zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/oral-history-drive-black-history.
Promotional materials for the project carry the theme "Black History Is American History," along with the line "Today, we reflect. Tomorrow, we listen."
The project is a collaboration with Dr. Laura Sikes of Texas A&M University–Texarkana and the Red River Center for History and Culture. Organizers will collect personal memories, family stories, cultural traditions and firsthand accounts of daily life in the community.
"Too often, important stories are lost because no one took the time to record them," TMS Executive Director Ana Willis said. Willis said the museums system wants residents to know "their experiences matter, their memories matter, and their voices matter."
The recordings will become part of the Texarkana Historical Society's ongoing preservation efforts and will be available to researchers, educators, students and community members studying the region's history.
Organizers said the project is intended to build a fuller picture of Texarkana's past by documenting the experiences of individuals and families whose stories may not have been widely recorded.
