TEXARKANA, Ark. — Texarkana will serve as the capital of Arkansas on Wednesday — at least for a day.
Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has named Texarkana her 19th "Capital for a Day," a program that brings the governor, cabinet members, and senior state officials into a community to meet with local leaders. Sanders signed the proclamation Monday. Siloam Springs held the designation most recently, on June 30.
The visit is something of a homecoming. Sanders spent part of her childhood in Texarkana while her father, former Gov. Mike Huckabee, served as pastor of Beech Street Baptist Church from 1986 to 1992.
Her itinerary for Wednesday includes a stop at GoodLuxe Coffee at 8:30 a.m., a visit to the Texarkana Welcome Center at 9:25 a.m., and remarks at the Texarkana Chamber of Commerce's "State of Lithium" event at 11:30 a.m. The governor is also scheduled to hold a public meet-and-greet at Zapata's downtown around noon, though seating is limited and residents are asked to sign up in advance.
The governor's proclamation highlights Texarkana's two-state heritage, including the federal post office and courthouse that sits in both Texas and Arkansas, along with the Four States Fair and Rodeo, Tuskegee Airman Woodrow "Woody" Crockett, and the city's role in the filming of "Smokey and the Bandit."
The designation lasts only one day, but the program is designed to strengthen ties between state and local government while spotlighting communities around Arkansas.
